Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE II: a new lens for portrait enthusiasts

2

Samyang has undertaken an overhaul of its range of lenses. After the AF 35mm F1.4 FE II and the AF 50mm F1.4 FE II, the AF 85mm F1.4 FE II arrives. It should delight photographers who love sustained bokeh thanks to its generous aperture and its focal length suitable for portraits.

Samyang is one of the few opticians to produce lenses for our hybrid cameras while offering autofocus. With the new AF 85mm F1.4 FE II, the Korean manufacturer continues to renew its range. As its name suggests, this lens is intended for the Sony E-mount and more specifically for devices with a 24×36 sensor.

In addition to the AF 35mm F1.4 FE II and the AF 50mm F1.4 FE II, the fixed focal length AF 85mm F1.4 FE II is the third pebble renewed since the launch of the range in 2016. Intended for full-frame cameras, it remains compatible with Sony APS-C cameras with a focal length equivalent to 127.5 mm.

An atypical optical construction

The lens is based on an optical construction comprising 11 elements divided into 8 groups. Four elements are HR glass and one is ED glass to maximize resolution and reduce aberrations. Above all, Samyang claims that the AF 85mm F1.4 FE II lens is the only E-mount lens in the world without an aspherical lens. These lenses are pretty much a must-have for improving lens performance, but Samyang claims they can cause unsightly rings in the bokeh just got rid of them. A little dubious on this point, we are very curious to test this AF 85mm F1.4 FE II in order to check for ourselves the rendering of the background blur.

Customization and weather protection

In the other characteristics, we find the traditional improvements on the autofocus, as much in photo as in video. On the barrel of the lens, a focus hold button is available, while a customizable switch allows you to call other functions.
