Samyang V-AF 100mm T2.3 FE, a lightweight and affordable “cinema” autofocus lens

The progress made by cameras dedicated to video, such as Sony’s ZV1, has the side effect of giving impetus to lenses intended for this practice, such as the brand new V-AF 100mm T2.3 FE from Samyang. A moderate telephoto lens that joins the 24 mm, 35 mm, 45 mm and 75 mm of this video range with autofocus (V-AF) dedicated to Sony hybrid bodies.

Like any self-respecting “cinema” — or at least “video” — lens, its brightness is not announced in the form of an “f/”, essentially valid at the center of the image and at full aperture, but with a “T”. A detail which is not one since in the video domain, this value imposes homogeneous illumination over the entire image circle – which often explains a lower brightness than photo optics. Samyang promises that this new 100 mm is fully in line with the optics belonging to this same range.

With this fifth optic (and soon a sixth, read at the end), Samyang has developed a coherent range both from the point of view of equipment and design. In terms of equipment, we must obviously remember this autofocus, which is so practical for reducing the number of operators – and which takes full advantage of advances in subject acquisition and tracking algorithms present on modern cameras. As well as an optical part capable of resolving up to a definition of 8K (33 Mpx) while offering bokeh.subtle” (dixit the press release).

Added to this is an all-weather design with numerous seals (6), smooth autofocus (STM?), customizable buttons and switches, etc. But also a front metal mount equipped with an electronic socket for adding accessories (Manual Focus Adapter for precise focusing, as well as a future anamorphic adapter) and a double LED system. Placed one on the front and the other on the side of the device, these Tally lamps indicate the status of the device (in filming mode, etc.).

Furthermore, to attract drone operators, Samyang has designed its 100mm T/2.3 in the same “mold”: the optics have the same size (identical dimensions and filter diameter), the same weight (280 g) and offer the same balance as its sisters. Enough to quickly change lenses on a drone without having to worry about balance or accessory compatibility.

A sixth lens, a 20 mm, will join the range in 2024.

In addition to this announcement of immediate availability, the Korean takes the opportunity to announce the arrival of a 20mm T1.9 FE during the first half of 2024. A very wide angle which will allow the range to cover a total field ranging from 20 mm to 100mm with six focal lengths.

The V-AF 100mm T2.3 FE is available now for €650, only in Sony FE mount (compatible with APS-C bodies, subject to the cropping required by the smaller sensor).
