The shoe manufacturer Birkenstock opens a new factory in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. The sandals with the orthopedic footbed are selling so quickly around the world that the Görlitz plant needed some relief. 1000 jobs are to be created in Pasewalk.
The shoe manufacturer Birkenstock Group has opened a new production facility in Pasewalk (West Pomerania-Greifswald). With a sum of 110 million euros, this is the largest single investment in the company’s history, as the company from Linz in Rhineland-Palatinate announced in Pasewalk. The construction time for the new plant in the Berlin-Szczecin industrial park not far from the A20 motorway was 17 months. There are currently 200 employees working in Pasewalk, and in the long term there should be a total of 1000 employees. The construction is one of the largest MV corporate investments since 1990.
In Western Pomerania, Birkenstock manufactures, among other things, sandals with an orthopedic footbed, which are to be delivered to more than 100 countries worldwide. According to the Birkenstock Group, it has 6,200 employees worldwide. The Görlitz site in Saxony in particular is to be relieved with the new plant in Pasewalk. There they have had positive experiences with production in the German-Polish border area. The industrial area in Pasewalk, not far from the 11 and 20 motorways and around 120 kilometers from Berlin, has been empty for many years. After intensive advertising, a shelf manufacturer from southern Germany had already settled there, and according to economic development there are now other interested parties.
Since 2021, the company has been owned by the US-French investment company L Catterton and the private investment company of the French billionaire Arnault family, Agache. The sandals made in Germany are sold in over 100 countries. Birkenstock has also been offering beds and cosmetics since 2017. The sandal manufacturer had already established itself as a brand in the luxury segment before it was taken over by L Catterton. Birkenstock was founded in 1774 and was permanently and fully family-owned until 2021.
