  • Lucifer Morgenstern from “Sandman” is the same character as Lucifer Morningstar from “Lucifer”.
  • However, the role has been recast to be a little closer to the DC Comics version.
  • With the casting of Gwendoline Christie, the Prince of Hell is as androgynous as the original.

Are you currently watching “Sandman” on Netflix and were taken aback by Lucifer Morgenstern? Yes, that’s right, you know the Prince of Hell from another series! In it, Lucifer or Lucifer even plays the main role.

Lucifer Morningstar is the main character of the Amazon series “Lucifer”, but here he is played by Tom Ellis. However, the “Sandman” version of Gwendoline Christie is based on the same character from Neil Gaiman’s comics. In the German translation of the Netflix series, however, Christie’s devil gets the translated name “Lucifer Morgenstern”.

The outcry from “Lucifer” fans was great when it became known that Ellis should not play the charming devil again. But producers Gaiman and Allan Heinberg wanted their “Sandman” film adaptation of a Lucifer that was a little closer to the original DC comics.

Since the devil for Gaiman is not assigned a specific gender anyway, the choice fell on actress Gwendoline Christie, who broke with clichéd gender roles in her role as Brienne von Tarth from “Game of Thrones” and traveled through Westeros as a knight.

Lucifer from “Sandman” has the ability to change reality at will and also his form. Lucifer has appeared in various forms in various DC comics. Gaiman defends the casting choice on Twitter: “How exactly has the character changed? Is it the penis? It’s okay. Lucifer doesn’t have a penis in the comics, and I don’t think Gwendoline Christie does either. The dialogue is the same…it’s because Gwendoline bigger than the Lucifer in the Sandman comics, right?”

So you can look forward to an androgynous Lucifer by Gwendoline Christie, where the actress can show her darkest side. Maybe we’ll see her again in a second season of “Sandman”.
