Sanitary protocol, masks… The details of Jean-Michel Blanquer on schools

The Minister of National Education has announced that the government wishes to lighten the health protocol in schools after the February holidays

While a new strike in schools is looming for the day of January 27, the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer returned on Wednesday to the health protocol, a source of anger among teachers. “We are in a position to open social dialogue very strongly, especially in the current period”, he assured on BFMTV. “Until the February holidays, there should not be any major changes” to the health protocol. On the other hand, Jean-Michel Blanquer hopes to be able to “lighten the protocol upon returning from the February holidays”, if the epidemiological situation allows it.

This reduction could be done by zone, according to the school holiday dates of the different academies. The incidence rate and the local situation of each establishment can be used as a criterion to lighten the protocol.

90% of FFP2 masks are there

Jean-Michel Blanquer announced that “90% of FFP2 masks have arrived”. These masks had been promised by the government at the end of the strike of January 13, to better protect the educational staff against the numerous contaminations in the schools. “Surgical masks are also coming,” he added, as the remaining 10% of FFP2 masks are on their way.

According to the minister, 4% of classes are currently closed in primary school and 10% of teachers are absent on average.

High school reform

Some associations have pointed to the drop in the number of girls present in mathematics courses since the high school reform led by the Minister of National Education. “The reality is that we are in the process of strengthening mathematics”, replied the minister, who indicates that the figures put forward are not exact and “mix cabbage and carrots”. “They compare the S series with those who choose specialty education today. However, in the old S series, there were many people who went into medicine afterwards. When you want to do medicine today, you do physics and life and earth sciences (SVT), then complementary maths. And that does not fit into the specialty teaching figures,” he said. However, he concedes that “for 30 years, there has been a drop in the level of mathematics” in France.

“I am a bit of an outlet”

Under fire from critics since the announcement of the health protocol from Ibiza, where he was on vacation, Jean-Michel Blanquer defended himself as a “passionate” who wishes to serve children. “At times, I’m a bit of an outlet. Never mind if I take hits,” he said.
