Over 30 years ago, Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. were Hollywood’s dream couple. However, the actress now reveals that the relationship was shaped by Downey’s battle with addiction.
Sarah Jessica Parker, 58, and Robert Downey Jr., 58, met on the set of the film “Moving In – A Almost Intact Family” in 1984. At that time, the two were just 18 years old. They fell head over heels in love, moved in together after just a few weeks and were to remain a couple for seven years. During this time they had many red carpet appearances together, becoming an up-and-coming power couple in Hollywood – since they weren’t as famous then as they are now. But the relationship had its ups and downs. Downey’s drug addiction has repeatedly presented the couple with challenges and ultimately led to their separation, the “Sex and the City” star now emphasizes.

The “Iron Man” actor’s drug addiction, which caused him to commit multiple crimes and which he was only able to overcome in the early 2000s, weighed heavily on Parker. She was extremely frustrated because her efforts to help her partner at the time went unnoticed by his inner circle. “People around him turned me down, but I gave him stability and tried to create a steady heartbeat that allowed him to show up on time,” she told The New Yorker, adding, “That made me angry and ashamed.”

Through a spokesman, the Marvel star only told the “New Yorker” that he had “great respect” for his ex-partner. A few years ago, Robert Downey Jr. spoke at length about his past relationship and past addictions. “I liked to drink and I had a drug problem, which didn’t suit Sarah Jessica because it’s the opposite of all that,” he told the Parade newspaper in 2008, adding, “She gave me a home and was understanding. She tried to help me. She was so upset when I couldn’t get over it. I was in love with Sarah Jessica… and love clearly wasn’t enough.

After her relationship with the “Avengers” actor ended in 1991, Sarah Jessica Parker found her happiness in Matthew Broderick, 61. The actors have been married since 1997 and have son James, 20, and twin daughters Tabitha and Loretta, 13. Robert Downey Jr , gave the vows to Deborah Falconer, 57, in 1992, and their son Indio, 29, came from the relationship. In 2005, Robert and film producer Susan Downey, 49, (formerly Susan Levin) walked down the aisle, together they have son Exton, 11, and daughter Avri, 8.
