Sarah McBride: She becomes the first female transgender senator in the United States

One victory is already certain: the Democrat Sarah McBride has won the election in Delaware, making her the first female transgender senator in the USA.

Until it is clear who will be the next president of the USA, we have to wait a little longer, but we can already celebrate a partial victory: The Democratic candidate Sarah McBride (30) will be the first transgender senator in the USA. The 30-year-old won the Delaware race in Tuesday's elections. She triumphed over her Republican rival Steven Washington with 86 percent of the vote.

Shortly after the result was announced, wrote the activist for transgender rights on Twitter: "We did it. We won the election. Thank you, thank you, thank you." She hopes tonight will show the LGBTQ children "that our democracy is big enough for them too".

Internship in the White House

During her studies, Sarah McBride did an internship in the White House, Barack Obama (59) was US President at the time. She also published an autobiography in 2018 entitled "Tomorrow Will Be Different". In it she tells of her experiences in the fight for equality in the USA and of her relationship with her husband Andrew Cray, who died of cancer.
