fun, news, tips … what else?

According to health professionals, a satchel should not exceed 10% of the child’s weight. But today the balance sheet is established, the weight of the schoolbags is still too heavy for the pupils. The FCPE, the main federation of parents of pupils, calls for a law and calls on the National Education to find new solutions to this problem which persists over the years.

Denounced several times by successive national education ministers for decades, this situation of “Satchel too heavy” has not seen much progress. Thus, the weight of students’ satchels is not reduced in any way, which has problematic consequences for the health of the children.

Shoulder pain, redness caused by the friction of the straps, Héloïse does not understand why she and the other students have to be loaded all day, while they are still growing. “My bag weighs between 8 and 13 kg every day” tells Héloïse, secondary school student in Hauts-de-Seine. But how to explain such a weight, especially in college? “The teachers want us to always have our textbooks with us and in certain subjects such as maths, we constantly use three notebooks” explains the student.

The FCPE therefore calls for a law that “Would lead to a protective code for children and adolescents in the same way as the Labor Code for employees” declares the federation.
For Audrey Chanonat, principal assistant of a college located in La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime) and member of SNPDEN, the main union of school leaders, “The problem of too heavy school bags is recurrent, even if things have been done to try to solve this problem.”

Indeed in his college, the establishment of a different system has been applied for three years: the sixth grade students have only three textbooks: French, maths and geo history. For the rest of the subjects, photocopies are authorized for the pupils.

Is the digital tablet THE solution?

At the Institution Notre-Dame La Riche in Tours, textbooks have been replaced by a digital tablet. In order to lighten the weight of the satchels, this advantageous process for the 130 sixth graders now extends to fifth graders. “The pupils, in particular the 6th, take everything, sometimes even subjects which they do not have” notes Vincent Langlois, assistant principal sixth and second class, “We still had to find something to get this complex out of the turtle! And the tablet has an undeniable advantage.”
