wde./(Reuters) Saudi princess Basmah bint Saud has been released from prison after nearly three years, where she and her daughter have been held without charge. This was announced by her lawyer on Saturday.
The 57-year-old is the youngest daughter of the late King Saud and disappeared with her daughter Souhoud Al Sharif in March 2019. It cannot be verified whether there is a connection with their criticism of the Saudi royal family and the situation of women’s rights in the country. The royal family has never commented publicly on the case.
The two women arrived home in Jeddah on January 6, said their lawyer, Henri Estramant. The princess is fine, but will seek medical treatment. In 2020, Princess Basmah announced on her social media channels that she was being held in the capital, Riyadh, and that she was sick. Around the time of her arrest, she actually wanted to travel abroad for medical treatment.
