When it comes to spreadsheet programs, Microsoft Excel is still the industry leader. The software is part of the Microsoft 365 Suite, which also includes Word, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook.
If you forget to save your Excel file, the software offers the option of restoring previous versions of the document. To use this function, you must first activate a certain option.

To restore previous versions of your Excel file, you must first enable automatic backup. To do this, open an Excel document. Then navigate to “File” or click on the Office icon at the top left of the screen.
Then select “Options” or “Excel Options”. Then activate the option “Save AutoRecover information” under the “Save” category. In the “Minutes” field you can also specify how often Excel should save the changes, for example every three or five minutes.

How you go about restoring an earlier version of Excel depends on whether you saved the file. If so, simply open the Excel document. Then navigate to “File” and then “Get Info”.

Now under “Manage Workbooks” select the file labeled “when I closed without saving”. Click “Restore” at the top of the file to overwrite all previously saved versions.
If you haven’t saved the Excel document, go to “Get Info,” “Manage Documents,” and then “Recover Unsaved Workbooks.” Select the file you want and click “Open.” You can save this version of the file by clicking “Save” under “File.”
A notice: In some cases, you can also restore the unsaved Excel file from a temporary folder. To do this, use the path: “VerweC:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataLocalMicrosoftOfficeUnsavedFiles”. If there is an Excel file here, you can open it by double-clicking it.
