5 airport mistakes that cost you money – and how to avoid them

Airports are expensive – and can consume part of your budget before your vacation even starts. 5 tips to save you money.
We know it’s not that smart to change a lot of money at the airport – the rates are always the worst there. But what other cost traps are there at the airport, and how do we avoid them?
1. Take a taxi to the airport
Sure, it’s the most convenient, but it’s also the most expensive: taking a taxi to the airport. It is much cheaper to get on the airport shuttle or public transport. Extra bonus: It’s also better for the environment.
2. Park at the airport
Parking at the airport is also convenient, but it can be more expensive than a plane ticket. Parking fees at the airport are high, although the car is often relatively unprotected. In Düsseldorf, for example, a week of parking can cost 266 euros. Perhaps the park and fly options of some hotels are something for you: There you can sleep the night before departure, take the shuttle to the airport and leave your car cheaply in the hotel’s underground car park (e.g. www.parken-und -fly) .de).
3. Forget your water bottle and snacks
Seems like a small thing, but it pays off: If you take a drinking bottle with you, you save more than a few euros. It is well known that we are not allowed to go through security with a full bottle. Means: We have to stock up on the expensive drinks at the gate or on board. You can fill up your own bottle at the water dispenser or at the faucet in the toilet. The same applies here: Not just the wallet, but also the environment. Also buy snacks for the trip before driving to the airport!
4. Not planning enough time
The lines for clearance and security can be long and slow, we all know that. What many do not know: It is not so rare that travelers miss their flight because of this. And that’s not only very annoying, but also very expensive. Make sure you plan enough time to be able to complete all the procedures at the airport before boarding.
5. Pack too much
If it turns out that you have excess baggage only when you check in your baggage, it will be expensive – every kilo costs. Therefore, when packing your suitcase, it is essential to check how many kilos of luggage are allowed with your ticket. You can check whether you are exceeding the limit on your body scales at home.
