A 31-year-old technician died in Savoie crushed by a machine on the construction site of the Lyon-Turin tunnel, the second death in four months as part of this controversial project, the Albertville prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday. Around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, this employee of the Vinci company “started alone moving a two-ton concrete press which then poured” on him, the prosecution explained to AFP, confirming information from France Bleu Savoie. “An investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances” of this event, he added.

A 57.5 km long tunnel

The victim was responsible for the concrete laboratory in Saint-Martin-la-Porte in Maurienne, said in a press release the company Tunnel Euralpin Lyon Turin (TELT), which is overseeing this high-speed line project between Lyon and Turin. “His colleagues present at the scene immediately reacted and called the emergency services” who, despite their “rapid arrival” did not succeed in resuscitating him, adds the company which “associates itself with the pain of the family, relatives and colleagues of the victim.

On July 19, a 51-year-old worker had already died on a rail-laying site in the Parquet industrial zone in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. Several decades old, the colossal Lyon-Turin LGV project and its 57.5 km tunnel is due to be commissioned in 2032. It is generating strong reactions. In the winter of 2018-2019, several large demonstrations successively brought together tens of thousands of supporters and opponents of the project in Turin.
