Kevin Greutert was chosen to direct this new opus, which takes place between Saw and Saw II. He knows the Saw franchise well since he was the director of Saw 6 and Saw 3D. In addition, he has directed other horror films: Jessabelle, Visions and Jackals. Asked by Total Film, he explained about Saw X. “I really think this is the most independent Saw film since the first one.”
“There’s no need to know or remember previous installments. The experience is richer if you know Saw, because otherwise you won’t necessarily know who Amanda is when she appears, but what happens is very clear from the start. There’s no obvious new direction to take after this one. But I think there will probably be more Saw films, especially if this one is a success.”

Production designer Anthony R. Stabley continues: “What is certain is that filming in Mexico put us in a different state of mind. This film is very influenced by Mexican culture. Not to mention the incredible places where we were able to film. It’s not at all easy to find new tortures or new traps. Mexico City is an ideal city where we were able to brainstorm incredible traps and tortures with Kevin. It’s a slow and complex process, where we first make drawings to come up with the idea, before moving on to full-scale testing by building these traps.”

“Steve told them, ‘I’m actually just working on a movie… You can come in and see if you want?’ The cops started laughing. They said ‘We would like to, but everything is in order.’ That must have been a pretty realistic performance. But it’s a pretty funny story…”
