“Saw” series on free TV from today: new horror format on Tele 5

TELE 5

The films in the “Saw” series literally get under your skin. As of today, Tele 5 is showing the first eight parts of the horror franchise in a new TV series with presenter Lutz van der Horst.

  • Eight parts of the “Saw” series are now running on Tele 5 on free TV
  • The films will be presented by “heute show” satirist Lutz van der Horst
  • The first “Saw” film will be shown on TV today from 11 p.m. and will be available online from 1.05 a.m

With the first “Saw” film, young director James Wan managed a real surprise hit in 2004: The cheaply produced horror film got by with few actors and locations, but set new standards in the context of sadistic violence and nerve-wracking tension. What began as a taboo has now become a cult film series – and from today Tele 5 is dedicating its own broadcast format to the “Saw” franchise.

The latter is presented by the appropriately dressed moderator Lutz van der Horst, whom the TV audience knows from the ZDF “heute show”. The first part of the scary fun starts today at 11 p.m. on free TV and will then be available online in the media center from 1.05, the following parts can then always be seen on Wednesdays at the same time.

The “Saw” series: killers with a morale club

The films with the Jigsaw Killer put horror fans under their spell for a very specific reason: the villain selects his victims according to supposedly moral criteria and then confronts them with diabolical traps in which the will to survive of the tormented is tested.

A contrast program to the classic slasher program of the “Halloween” series or “Friday the 13th”, where mainly mute giants go on manhunts with knives and machetes. The appeal of “Saw” no longer lies in the fear of the faceless: in the nine films in the series, the killer is given more and more profile, history and background – but the horror doesn’t necessarily diminish as a result.

Tele 5: The home of genre fare on free TV

Tele 5 has been part of Discovery’s media empire since 2020, but continues undeterred in niche fare: In its flagship format, the “Worst Movies of All Time” (SchleFaZ), the station has been delighting audiences for years with embarrassing productions that hand-picked by master of ceremonies Oliver Kalkofe and pulled through the cocoa with relish.

But that’s not all of the idiosyncratic film series: Tele 5 launched the “Bumsbuster” format, among other things, and in the course of it rude ancient erotic films from the deepest TV mothball. But there is not only old clothes at Tele 5: The internationally successful sci-fi series “Star Trek: Discovery” will also start there this March.
