Scarlet Witch in Marvel: how did Elizabeth Olsen get the role?

Find out how Elizabeth Olsen landed the role of Scarlet Witch aka Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We are at the end of 2012 when Elizabeth Olsen approaches her agents, clearly asking them to find her a role in a film saga. Until then, the little sister of the Olsen twins appeared in the series and television films of her elders as well as in independent cinema with great successes, but still mostly confidential.

After the failure of the American remake of Old Boy in which she appeared, the actress therefore wanted to make more commercial films and signed for Kaijū’s film Godzilla (2014) with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It was at the same time that Joss Whedon wanted to hire her for the role of the Scarlet Witch for Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). At the microphone of Collidershe remembers :

[Aaron Taylor-Johnson] and I had separate meetings with Joss while we were shooting Godzilla reshoots. We were like, ‘Are we really going to do this? It’s so funny, should we switch from playing husband and wife to playing brother and sister?’

The laughter passed, the pressure mounts. As they become the first choices to play the Maximoff twins (Wanda and Pietro), the two actors are afraid of Marvel contracts that they consider too restrictive. They call each other to find out if the other is too before accepting. Once reassured, they join the Marvel universe and appear as adversaries of the Avengers.

Finally, Aaron Johnson will only make one Marvel movie and will never reappear in the saga (at least at the time of these lines, because with the multiverse, everything is possible). Elizabeth Olsen continued her journey with the MCU to the point where her character got her own miniseries titled WandaVision and explored the Sorceress’ grief over the death of her husband Vision in Avengers: Infinity War.

Most recently, Scarlet Witch appeared as an antagonist in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in which Wanda is still searching for a family. We do not know at this stage in which project the character will return, which has meanwhile allowed Elizabeth Olsen to shoot a new series, Love And Death, planned for HBO Max, in which she plays … an ax killer.
