After Disney commented on a lawsuit brought by Scarlett Johansson, the actress has been assisted by several organizations.

Scarlett Johansson (36) is suing Disney because the Marvel blockbuster “Black Widow” was released simultaneously in theaters and on the Disney + streaming platform. The leading actress claims that Disney has committed a breach of contract, but the company defends itself in a statement and describes the lawsuit as “sad”, among other things. The organizations ReFrame, Women in Film and Time’s Up, which campaign against discrimination against women in general and in some cases specifically in the film industry, are now at Johansson’s side.

What exactly is it about

Among other things the industry journal “Variety” had reported, citing the available court documents, that Johansson accused Disney of having failed to keep agreements with the simultaneous publication and thus deprived them of possible income.

The Group had then stated in a statementthat the lawsuit is unfounded – and describes it as “sad and regrettable” because it neglects “the terrifying and persistent global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic”. The income opportunities for the actress, who have already received US $ 20 million (the equivalent of around 16.8 million euros), have even been improved.

Actress is not “selfish”

In a joint statement by the organizations mentioned, which is available to the industry portal “Deadline”, it is now said that one does not want to interfere in the legal matter. But they stand firmly against Disney’s statements that try to “portray Johansson as insensitive and egotistical” just because she is trying to enforce her contractually guaranteed rights.

It is a gender-specific attack on the character of the actress that has no place in a business conflict. The attack also “contributes to an environment in which women and girls are perceived as if they are less capable than men of protecting their own interests without being exposed to criticism of themselves.”

“Black Widow” was the first Marvel production in around two years to return to theaters. According to “Box Office Mojo” has the action blockbuster has grossed more than 320 million dollars, around 270 million euros, worldwide.
