Dn the Schengen area, 3.5 million people cross borders every day without checks to go to work, study or go sightseeing. But this right is denied to Romanians and Bulgarians even though the European Commission recognized 11 years ago that these two countries already fulfilled all the conditions. Croatia is also a candidate for entry, but this country seems to cause fewer admission problems.
The Council has the opportunity to decide for or against the entry of these three countries into the Schengen zone on 8 December next. The Czech Presidency has been very active in preparing for this vote, which nevertheless requires unanimity within the Home Affairs Council.
