In Sandra Maxeiner's new book, the singer comments on how much his lung disease was affecting his family.

Roland Kaiser: The family suffered because of him

Roland Kaiser, 68, has been an integral part of the German hit scene since the 1970s. His hits "Santa Maria", "Seven Barrels of Wine" and "Joana" have long been an integral part of the musical landscape. But a few years ago the likable pop star was in bad shape: in 2000 he was diagnosed with COPD, a chronic, incurable lung disease. At first, Kaiser did not dare to make the disease public.

"I was afraid of losing my presence. Afraid that the concert halls could remain empty when it comes out," the singer explained in an interview with Zeit. Only in 2006 did his wife Silvia Keiler make him public with the disease Four years later, in 2010, the relief finally came: thanks to a lung transplant, the hit king is doing great again today.

In Sandra Maxeiner's book "Tides – About the Power of Change", the singer philosophizes in a guest contribution about fleeting happiness and also says that in the end his family suffered even more than he did: "I have personally experienced that people who the sick suffered the time, were in the end even more affected than the one who has since recovered, because the relative is then at the end of his strength. " The time was particularly hard for Silvia, who also had to look after the children together. Kaiser's realization from this difficult time: "When the other is strong again, the relative collapses". We hope the family has regained its full strength and wish Roland Kaiser good health for the future.
