Help out at the wholesaler, on the farm or in the swimming pool – there are possibilities. An overview.

Anyone who is looking now – a good month before the start of the long holiday – needs a bit of luck to get hold of a holiday job. However, there are still opportunities for secondary and high school students in various sectors, as a survey by the SRF consumer magazine “Espresso” shows.

In the supermarket:

At the major distributors, for example, Coop and Migros as well as Aldi offer holiday jobs – Coop and Migros for young people from the age of 15, Aldi from the age of 16. Coop and Migros recommend asking a branch directly. This is probably the easiest way to do it for other businesses. You can at Aldi on-line see if and where there are still free holiday jobs available.

On the farm:

The Union Agriviva arranges numerous aid deployment options on farms throughout Switzerland. Online, young people from the age of 14 can also determine the activity more precisely: “It ranges from mucking out and cleaning animals to field work, childcare to the grape harvest or working in the farm shop,” says manager Katharina Teuscher. During the summer holidays, the minimum duration of an assignment is two weeks.

Clean schoolhouse:

The classic from earlier years is no longer offered in every school building. But there are still school administrations and house services who are happy to get active support in cleaning the building. It is best to inquire directly on site.

At the post office:

Once a classic, Swiss Post hardly offers such assignments anymore, the media office reports. One of the reasons for this is that various simple activities have now been automated or work that used to be done by “holiday jobbers” has been outsourced to third-party companies.

In the bar:

It is quite possible that certain companies offer holiday jobs, writes the industry association Gastrosuisse on request. It is best to contact the companies directly. “A 5-star hotel is unlikely to hire students, but a pool restaurant will.” It is important that the youth protection regulations are observed. For example, young people under the age of 16 are not allowed to work in the service.

On the construction:

Not possible as a holiday job for under 18s. All construction activities are classified as dangerous and therefore only adults and young people in an apprenticeship are allowed, writes the Swiss Builders’ Association.
