Si Anne Hidalgo welcomes the “dedensification” of Paris, which has lost 120,000 fewer inhabitants in ten years, parents are worried about the direct consequences of this drop in population. According The Parisian, the number of primary school students in the Paris Academy has fallen by 20% in ten years, which represents 27,500 fewer schoolchildren, including nearly 15,000 in the last three years due to the “post-exodus -Covid”. However, this entails a threat of closure of 187 classes from the start of the next school year.

These closures concern 180 schools in the capital, mainly in the 18e and 20e boroughs. An argument that parents have a hard time hearing, especially since the neighborhoods affected by these closures are among those most endowed with “priority education networks”. There are thus six schools in REP in the 18e and 20e arrondissement – i.e. twelve out of the 26 in the capital; two in REP+ for the 18eone for the 20e – in four Parisian establishments.

“Why not do it in less poor districts? asks a mother interviewed by BFMTV. “They should have taken advantage [de la baisse démographique] to have a limited number of students to allow development and easy learning for children, ”regrets another.

These class closures could also lead to the loss of 155 teaching posts. A demonstration is planned for February 14 in front of the rectorate and a march is planned for the 20e borough this Friday, February 10.
