Between holiday plans for some and anticipation of the tourist offer for others, the 2023 – 2024 school holiday calendar is necessary but is still not known. Usually, the latter is unveiled in the summer.
Since the 1960s, school holidays have been divided into zones for practical and economic reasons. The zones are chosen so that the number of pupils is roughly equivalent between each of them. It is the Ministry of National Education that deals with the dates of the school calendar for a period of three years. The school year comprises at least 36 weeks, divided into 5 work periods of comparable length, separated by 4 periods of social vacation. Each year, the school holiday period is traditionally revealed during the summer.
However, this year, when we are already at the end of November, the 2023 – 2024 school calendar is still awaited and tourism professionals are worried about it. On the side of the parents, who would like to anticipate their next stays, the impatience is not less. But why is the Minister of National Education delaying setting the dates for the 2023-2024 school calendar?

These vacation periods are therefore more expected than ever and as a priority, the start date of 2023. Thus, the representatives of the educational world and the Ministry of National Education are in the process of consulting to set the calendar. One thing is certain: the alternation of seven weeks of classes and two weeks of vacation must be respected.
But then why such a delay? In 2023 and 2024, many sporting events will take place in France, starting with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It is therefore not easy to reconcile the constraints and requirements of each party. The office of the Minister Delegate for Tourism, contacted by Le Figaroexplained that the next school calendar will be discussed “at the beginning of December” during a meeting of the Superior Council of Education.
