Roger Jungo spent his youth in the drug scene in Bern and Freiburg. Today, the 40-year-old is a sought-after craftsman.

In his carpentry workshop in the canton of Solothurn, Roger Jungo creates artistic tables made of wood with epoxy resin. His creations are now in demand worldwide. The 40-year-old has only recently been riding this wave of success. Before he discovered his passion for working with wood, the current family man went through difficult times. Homeless and a drug addict, he roamed the streets of Freiburg and Bern for many years.

Without training to become a sought-after artist

He taught himself the art of carpentry – with YouTube videos and the help of carpenter friends. Through constant practice and with his unique casting technique, the native of Freiburg finally made a name for himself.

He says about working as a carpenter: “I can do what I like to do. I am an artist. I can switch off there. It’s not stressful for me. I can work, study with concentration. I’m just at home there.”

youth in the drug scene

It took Roger Jungo a long time to get to this point in his life. When he was 17, he lived on the streets. He got on the wrong track and started using drugs. Crystal meth once kept him awake for eight days. The drugs got him to the point of becoming paranoid and freaking out.

This was followed by a hospital stay and longer drug withdrawals in psychiatry. Among other things, he passed the time with online dating. “I then met my wife through the internet. She always came to visit me. When I was released, I moved in with her immediately and have had the best relationship of my life ever since.”

Normal life is luxury for me. My biggest fear is that I could lose it again.

Today he lives with his wife and their son in the canton of Solothurn. His work and his family are the most important things in his life. “It’s actually standard, but for me it’s a luxury. My biggest fear is that I could lose it again.”
