Almuth Schult has won everything with VfL Wolfsburg, and now the goalkeeper is tempted by a new adventure. The 31-year-old leaves the Bundesliga for the west coast of the USA. In Los Angeles, she becomes part of Angel City FC, whose list of prominent shareholders seems almost endless.

National soccer goalkeeper Almuth Schult is continuing her career in the USA and is moving to the new Hollywood club in Los Angeles in the summer. The 31-year-old joins the recently formed Angel City FC in the professional league NWSL, the team’s prominent partners include actresses Natalie Portman and Eva Longoria, as well as tennis icon Serena Williams and former soccer stars Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach group of founders. It has been clear since the end of January that Schult will leave VfL Wolfsburg after the Bundesliga season.

According to consistent media reports, Schult will receive a contract in California until the end of 2023. The club confirmed the change a little later. “It was always my dream to play in the USA one day,” Schult told NDR: “The league there is more balanced than any other in Europe. Every team has national players from home and abroad. That’s why it’s very attractive as a goalkeeper to play there. You are challenged in every game and you don’t know beforehand which club will win the championship.”

Angel City FC will join the league at the start of the 2022 season at the end of April; a Challenge Cup is currently being played in the USA. Schult joins her new team after her contract with VfL and the European Championships in England (July 6th to 31st) expired. “Women’s football is very important in the USA and I’m looking forward to the many spectators in the stadiums,” she told NDR.

She gave birth to twins in 2020 and then spoke about difficulties in reconciling family and work. After the announcement of her departure from VfL, there was speculation about the end of the Olympic champion’s career. She played for the Wolves for nine years and has won the championship five times, the DFB Cup seven times and the Champions League in her debut season in 2014.
