Only the best films and series make it into the Netflix Top 10. But “Atlas” with Jennifer Lopez remains a perennial favorite in the best list, even though the sci-fi film is being torn apart as a mega-flop.

Netflix offers you a lot of exciting films and hit series like the current third season of “Bridgerton”. The success of new content on the streaming provider is particularly evident when the series and films make it into the Netflix Top 10.
But most of Netflix’s new releases go straight to the top of the list, even though they aren’t all that good. This is also the case with “Atlas” with Jennifer Lopez, which remains number 1 in the streaming service’s film charts this week.
The sci-fi action film is about the analyst Atlas Shepherd (Lopez), who, despite her mistrust, has to team up with an artificial intelligence (AI). Together they try to stop the renegade robot soldier Harlan Shepherd (Simu Liu, “Shang-Chi”) before he wipes out all of humanity.

According to the figures provided by Netflix, “Atlas” recorded over 31 million views last week. In second place by a long way is “Ice Age 5: Collision Course!” with exactly 9 million views. Although the streaming provider provides weekly information on streaming figures, the evaluations cannot be verified. And even if the series and films appear in the top 10, it just shows that Netflix’s own productions are given priority.
Despite a star-studded cast, including Mark Strong (“Tár”, “The Penguin”) and Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”), the Netflix film is not particularly well received by critics. On the US review platform Rotten Tomatoes, “Atlas” only received 17% of critics’ ratings. Among the provider’s general subscribers, it still received 52%, which is not a particularly good average either.
In recent years, Jennifer Lopez has mostly appeared in comedies such as “Shotgun Wedding” or the action film “The Mother” on Netflix, not only as an actress but also as a producer, just like in “Atlas”. But these productions also received only mixed reviews from viewers and critics.
Similar to the sci-fi films “Rebel Moon Part 1: Child of Fire” and “Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scarmaker” by director Zack Snyder, “Atlas”, directed by Brad Peyton (“Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”), will probably quickly fall out of the top 10. After the initial hype, such flops usually only stay on the best list for a short time and are unable to convince audiences in the long term.
