SCP: Penalty curiosity and record: away curse haunts Schalke 04 in Elversberg too

SCP: 911 curiosity and record
Away curse also haunts Schalke 04 in Elversberg

For the first time in the long history of FC Schalke 04, the Knappen are playing in Elversberg – there are only three points. The Royal Blues remain in the relegation battle of the second Bundesliga. Meanwhile in Nuremberg there is a strange penalty and a record, in the end Paderborn wins.

SV Elversberg – Schalke 04 1:1 (1:0)

Schalke 04 is still waiting for its first away win of the year in the 2nd Bundesliga and has not yet gotten rid of all relegation worries. Coach Karel Geraerts’ team won 1:1 (0:1) at SV Elversberg and, in twelfth place, is now five points ahead of the relegation place. Substitute Keke Topp (59′) saved Schalke’s draw.

The point could be extremely important with four games remaining; Schalke will play against relegation rivals VfL Osnabrück (May 4th) and Hansa Rostock (May 11th) in the coming weeks. The hosts, who beat the top team FC St. Pauli on the last matchday, took the lead through Florian Le Joncour (18th) and secured their place in the middle of the table.

Schalke started energetically and had their first great chance early on: Kenan Karaman (6th) hit the crossbar after a nice combination. But then Elversberg turned things around, Jannik Rochelt and Paul Wanner missed good opportunities to take the lead within a few seconds (17th), which Joncour took care of shortly afterwards. Topp managed to equalize a few minutes after his substitution, but Schalke didn’t show any real control even after that. The guests were very lucky when Wanner’s volley hit the crossbar (71′).

1. FC Nuremberg – SC Paderborn 0:2 (0:1)

1. FC Nürnberg continued its negative run and did not celebrate a win in the fifth game in a row. In the home game against SC Paderborn, coach Christian Fiel’s team lost 0:2 (0:1) and is standing in the middle of the table.

It was the third defeat in a row, but the SCP was able to celebrate again after six unsuccessful games. With a win, Nuremberg would have reached the 40-point mark and would probably have finally secured relegation. However, the club remained within striking distance of the relegation zone and the pursuers could catch up with wins at the weekend.

The Paderborn team clinched the away win thanks to goals from Adriano Grimaldi (10th) and Visar Musliu (61st). Youngster Can Uzun strangely missed a penalty for Nuremberg (55th, according to video evidence), only after VAR intervention did it become apparent that he had shot himself. Paderborn’s Sirlord Conteh also set a Bundesliga record: At 36.9 kilometers per hour, he is the fastest footballer ever recorded in the two federal leagues, he overtook Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi (36.7 km/h). With the win, Lukas Kwasniok’s team jumped to eighth place in the table.
