For Variety, Courteney Cox returns to her role in the Scream horror saga and makes an astonishing revelation about “Scream VI”, in theaters on March 8.

Starring in Scream VI next week, Courteney Cox – who has played journalist Gale Weathers since the first installment in 1997 – spoke with variety. The actress, who is taking over the role for the sixth time, talks about her character and her evolution in the franchise.

Courteney Cox explains: “She’s a really fun character, especially in the early movies because she’s ruthless. I was known by Friends And Sacred FamilyI was seen as the nice girl next door.

“I can be a real pest”

At the time I wrote a letter to Wes Craven to tell him: “I know you don’t see me like that, but believe me, I can be a real pest”.

In these films we care about the characters because they are unique. We don’t laugh at them, we laugh with them because they are intelligent. If they are stupid it is because they are supposed to be and in this case they are endearing.

Courteney Cox in “Scream VI”

In 2022, 11 years after Scream 4, one of horror cinema’s greatest sagas is relaunched by the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Courteney Cox returns to Woodsboro and reunites with her friend Sidney, still played by Neve Campbell, and her ex-husband Sheriff Dewey played by David Arquette, for a new fight against the masked killer.

Scream: “A film without Sidney is a bit ugly, but…” David Arquette comments on the departure of Neve Campbell

In the sixth installment, the actress is the only one to return to service. Neve Campbell indeed announced last year that she would not return after the studio’s refusal to increase her fee despite the profits garnered (730 million dollars in worldwide box office receipts for the 5 films). Cox says about it: “I missed working with her, but I support what she thinks is right.”

“I thought Kirby was dead!”

In Scream VI, Gale still lives in New York, as do new heroines Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega). She just released a new book about recent events. The great novelty of this new opus is that Ghostface also arrives in New York and that Kirby played by Hayden Panettiere in Scream 4 is back.

On this subject Courteney Cox explains: “It’s so interesting to see old actors come back. I have to remember what happened to them. I thought Kirby was dead! I’m so confused. I am very excited to be part of such a long saga.

If the actress obviously cannot say much about this new opus in order to keep the secret, she nevertheless makes an astonishing revelation. She didn’t know who was hiding under the Ghostface mask at the time of filming: “I have a really good scene with Ghostface and it was amazing. I’ve obviously been stabbed many times in the saga, but this time working with Ghostface and not knowing who’s hiding under the mask was really fun. Usually the moment I get stabbed, I know who it is.

Scream VI will be released in theaters on March 8.
