On the occasion of the release of “Scream 6”, here are five things to know about this new installment of the famous horror franchise started in 1996.
What is it about ? After striking three times in Woodsboro, after terrorizing the Windsor campus and Hollywood studios, Ghostface has decided to crack down on the Big Apple, but in a city as big as New York no one will hear you scream…
The Gainesville Ripper
The serial killer of the first Scream is inspired by a real American serial killer: Danny Rolling, nicknamed “The Ripper of Gainesville”. He was convicted and sentenced to death for the triple murder of a family in 1989 and the murders of five college students in Gainesville, Florida in 1990.
He was executed by lethal injection in 2006. Danny Rolling committed these eight homicides via multiple stab wounds and with incredible savagery, even going so far as to rape, behead and/or stage the corpses of his victims (in particular placing them in sexual positions)…
The directors are back
Scream VI is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, already at the controls of Scream (2022), of which this new opus is the direct sequel. The duo made a strong impression in 2019 with Wedding Nightmare, a horror film in which a bride’s wedding night turns into a nightmare when her in-laws ask her to honor a bloody tradition.
A lucrative franchise
Initiated by Wes Craven in 1996, the Scream saga has so far generated 744 million dollars in revenue worldwide. Scream grossed 173 million, Scream 2,172, Scream 3,162, Scream 4 96, and Scream (2022) 139.
Commercial successes all the more solid as the films did not cost very much. Thus, Scream was designed for 14 million, Scream 2 24, Scream 3 40, Scream 4 40 and Scream (2022) 24. Scream VI has a budget of 35 million dollars.
Ghostface’s voice back
Roger Jackson once again lends his voice to the terrifying killer in his original version. He officiated on all the opuses of the saga. On the French dubbing side, Emmanuel Curtil took charge of the voice of Ghostface in the first Scream, Boris Rehlinger in its sequel and Loïc Houdré in Scream 3, 4, 5 and 6.
They played Ghostface! (Spoilers!)
Prior to Scream VI, nine actors portrayed the terrifying Ghostface. In the first installment, two high schoolers Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) wreak havoc in Woodsboro. In Scream 2, vengeful Mrs. Loomis (Laurie Metcalf) and deranged student Mickey Altieri (Timothy Olyphant) wield the blade.
In the third installment, murderous filmmaker Roman Bridger (Scott Foley) dons the mask. In Scream 4, Sidney’s younger cousin Jill (Emma Roberts) and her accomplice Charlie (Rory Culkin) sport the killer outfit. Finally, in Scream (2022), it is Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison) and Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid) who make the blood flow.
