- So authors could end up being the sole authors of a script that was actually written entirely by ChatGPT.
“ChatGPT, write a funny comedy” – this is how the writing process of numerous screenwriters in Hollywood could soon begin. The use of artificial intelligence for creative tasks is currently often the subject of heated debate, especially when real jobs are at stake.
Contrary to expectations, the Writers Guild of America, a writers’ union committed to the fair treatment of screenwriters, has now spoken out in favor of using AI programs like ChatGPT. However, conditions are provided through which the authors themselves only benefit from the use of artificial intelligence.
ChatGPT should never be considered the author of a film, but only the author who uses the program or is supposed to improve a script that was initially written entirely by ChatGPT. A script that comes entirely from ChatGPT and has never come into contact with a human author is not planned.
Artificial intelligence is therefore always only a tool and can relieve the authors of a lot of work. The future will show whether these demands of the WGA will also be complied with by all film studios. It’s debatable whether an artificial intelligence would be able to write a solid screenplay just yet, but rapid technological advances leave no doubt that ChatGPT and other programs will be creating exciting fiction in the near future.
At least writers would be safe under the rules of the WGA, but movie buffs may have to get used to the idea that movies will one day be conceived by a machine.
