SCUF Reflex Pro PS5 TEST: a controller for demanding and competitive players

SCUF is a brand that has been offering, for several years, controllers for demanding players and its notoriety in the world of e-sport has only progressed as models. Its recent acquisition by Corsairat the end of 2019, seems not to have changed the situation. The DualSense of sonywhich our test is here, was until then the only possible choice to play its PlayStation 5 games. This controller, by establishing a visual and ergonomic break with the previous ones, stunning haptic sensations and adaptive triggers, succeeded in seducing its audience, which was not necessarily won at the base. But, as excellent as it is, it lacks a few things useful to pro players and it is these shortcomings that SCUF decided to correct by offering the three controllers SCUF Reflex, SCUF Reflex Pro and SCUF Reflex FPS. It is this last model that we have been testing for a few weeks and here is our opinion.

The DNA of SCUF goes through the modification of the original controllers and, unsurprisingly, it is still the case here. On order, it is possible to customize several components of these controllers in the assembler on the official websiteincluding shell, touchpad, button kit and triggers. This involves choosing the type of grip (textures), joysticks (shapes and lengths) or even the trigger. If you are a fan of FPSyou will undoubtedly opt for immediate click triggers in order to shoot faster, but thus sacrificing the adaptive force feedback that accompanies the original one. Attention, and it is a pity, this choice is made at the time of purchase and cannot be modified later. So take the time to refine your options before validating. Another point of detail, the more you play with them, the saltier the note. That said, we really loved this concept of customization which allows you not to have, visually, the same controller as your neighbor, and especially to have one in your hand. For our SCUF Reflex Pro, we have opted for a rubberized grip which holds the beast well in the hands and offers a more pleasant feel. We chose short concave joysticks where the thumbs rest much better than on the originals and triggers for FPS whose minimalist travel makes the click much faster. Other buttons are identical to those on the original model, although we found the touchpad click sound to be much quieter on our SCUF Reflex.

But the strength of this SCUF Reflex Pro lies in the presence, on the underside of the controller, of programmable palettes and accessible via middle or ring fingers. They can replace all the buttons Cross, Round, Square and Trianglethe arrows of the directional cross and the famous L1/R1, L3/R3. Their positioning is ideal so that you do not have to make any particular effort to operate them. and this allows you not to have to take your thumbs off the joysticks to click on a button. Three pre-recorded profiles are available: FPS/Battle Royale (blue), Sports (red) and racing games (green), which are switchable by simply pressing the dedicated button. No software is needed to modify the mapping of your keys and everything is done simply. A long press on the key of the profile to be modified switches it to mode Personalization and it is then sufficient to press on the palette to be reassigned and simultaneously on the key to be assigned to it for this to be done. To be repeated on the other palettes, if necessary, before exiting the menu by pressing the profile button again. Simpler, you die.

The SCUF Reflex Pro is a product for demanding players.

On the handling side, which is the most important, the SCUFf Reflex retains all the qualities of the original model of sony to which are added the famous palettes. These undoubtedly require time to adapt, because using your middle finger (or ring finger, depending) to access buttons is not the most instinctive. However, once past this phase, which may seem long, the gain is more than noticeable and comfortable, especially since the positioning of the paddles is really well thought out. The playing time offered by the battery is substantially the same as with the DualSense original and a very qualitative charging cable of two meters is provided. Unfortunately, no transport box is included as standard and, to have one, you will have to go through the purchase of a “player pack” at 35 € including a tube of Gamer Gripa pack of four joysticks and a 3 m USB-C cable.

The SCUF Reflex being equipped with the motherboard of the DualSenseit updates in the same way as the latter and offers the same level of compatibility with systems other than the PS5. We couldn’t test it with a Mac, but its compatibility with iOS and Android didn’t bother us. On PC, via Steam, many games have literally ignored it by default and you have to go through the “General Controller Settings” box to get it to work. Like its model, it is compatible with a PS4.

For gamers playstationthe SCUF Reflex Pro is a kind of Holy Grail that combines all the advantages of the original model and the know-how of SCUF in terms of esports. It brings to the PlayStation 5 enough to satisfy demanding players who were waiting for palettes to be able to be faster, more responsive and therefore more competitive. This promise is largely kept and whether technically or qualitatively, the SCUF Reflex Pro is at the top. But this excellence has a high base price (from €249.99) which can increase further depending on the customization chosen (around €400) and this without a protective cover. This price will therefore limit the pleasure of playing with this controller to the pros who need it in their competitions and to the most financially well-off players. Finally, we would also have liked to have the possibility of changing the triggers FPS against proactive depending on the type of game we play instead of being fixed on a choice at the time of purchase.
