Martin Schindler has a terrible start to the final of the Swiss Darts Trophy, but in the end he leaves the stage as a radiant winner. “The Wall” is catching up sensationally, but also benefits from the fact that his opponent gets the big flutter on the match darts.
Darts professional Martin Schindler clinched his second title on the PDC European Tour with a sensational comeback. At the Swiss Darts Trophy in Basel’s St. Jakobshalle, the 28-year-old from Strausberg won the final against Englishman Ryan Searle 8:7. After a weak start with a 0:4 deficit, “The Wall” showed morale and started his comeback just in time. “It was lucky that I won the final. Of course I had my timing, but he was the better player. That’s darts,” said Schindler, analyzing his surprising victory given the way the game went.
After Max Hopp six years ago in Saarbrücken and Ricardo Pietreczko last year in Hildesheim, Schindler only achieved Germany’s third victory on the European Tour in April in Riesa. Now he celebrated number four on the penultimate stop of the European Tour against a strong Searle. For winning the tournament, Schindler receives 30,000 pounds (around 35,000 euros) in prize money.
Schindler played well throughout the tournament. He beat Stephen Bunting 6:4 in the round of 16, Raymond van Barneveld 6:4 in the quarterfinals and Josh Rock 7:2 in the semifinals. But in Basel the German didn’t get into the game well. Searle played strongly from the start, won the first four sets at an incredible pace and apparently didn’t allow himself to be deterred by a finish of 142 points from Schindler to make it 2:5. But Searle wobbled his match darts and missed a total of seven. Schindler did better, smiling in front of his match darts and hitting luck with the third arrow.
