Revealed during Game Awards 2020 and dated during Game Awards 2022, SEASON: A letter to the future will arrive at the end of the month on PS5, PS4 and PC. And for those who have trouble understanding its principle, a trailer of gameplay and images have been released to better understand its history.

the PlayStation-Blog also shared a post from creative director Kevin Sullivan, in which he explains that we will be a young heroine exploring her world by bicycle to document her environment before a mysterious cataclysm plans to erase it. Armed with various accessories, she will meet the locals to record their testimonies, the sounds that surround them, the stories that rocked them and more.

In Season: A letter to the future, you play as a young woman from an isolated village who sets out to explore the world by bicycle for the first time and collect memories before a cataclysm erases everything in her path. Your journey takes you to a valley where the seeds for next season have already been planted. You meet the last inhabitants one day before they are evacuated. In these last moments, you are trying to unravel the mysteries of the valley. Each conversation, each landscape brings you a little closer to the truth: what is this season and why is it ending?

Why this story?

Most of the themes addressed in Season: A letter to the future are the expression of the anxieties of our time. We all know that the future that awaits us will be worse than the present in which we live. The more certain we are of this, the more we see the dark reality of things: those horrible years were also good times. The story exists to bring a kind of poetic expression (in the sense that we have no control and the subconscious is in control) to these thoughts and emotions, to dissociate them, to deconstruct them and to reconstitute them in a fantasy world. There is another major reason behind this story: the five senses.

The senses, or how we feel things

The game often appeals to your senses. The screen goes black several times when the character closes his eyes to listen carefully to the noises around him. Sensations of taste, touch or smell are often described during your exploration. Many of the features present on the PlayStation 5 have helped to express this theme effectively. What’s it like to ride a bike? The adaptive triggers allow us to vary the resistance according to the speed and the incline of the road, to really feel that you are going up a hill. Haptic feedback also varies with the different types of terrain you ride on. When you record in-game audio, you hear the sound, but also feel the shape of the device in the vibrations of the DualSense controller.

Tempest 3D AudioTech technology is also used in Season to give more depth to the spatial dimensions of sound. The world is full of curious noises that require our attention. Music is not just background noise, it is an integral part of the world, through autonomous instruments, the music of the radio, the unusual songs of birds, the sound of the wind passing through bamboo. These are rich details that have real meaning thanks to the importance that the game gives to the theme of the senses.

Interact with the world and its inhabitants

You will encounter a wide variety of characters as you adventure through the world of Season. When you meet them, they all prepare for the change of season in their own way. Accompany them in their last moments at home and record their story.

  • Kochi is a young boy with whom you go to explore the valley by bicycle the day before the flood. See the house he grew up in as he prepares to say his goodbyes.
  • Maytora is a foreign artist who documents the history of the valley through her sculptures. You are the only person to see his latest work.
  • Easel is the last monk in Tieng Valley. While his teachers and friends have abandoned him, he awaits the end of the season in isolation, having no reason to pray until you arrive.

You will be their guide in these times of silent crisis. For them, the changes in the world are not far away, they are already there. They try to move on, to survive and to adapt their way of life. It’s up to you to help them. Don’t forget them. Thanks to your journal, it is up to you to take them with you.

  • A magnificent road-trip by bike: On your bike, cross breathtaking landscapes. Take your time and admire each of the scenery you will discover.
  • Explore a mysterious world: During your journey, meet a wide variety of characters that influence the course of your story. Venture into the lands of the Tieng Valley, investigate and learn about the past and future of this place.
  • Document, Photograph and Record: Uncover memories, create recordings and unravel the mystery of this season before it ends. Your journal is the key to understanding this world.
  • An enchanting soundtrack: Listen to the music and sounds that punctuate your exploration and accompany you wonderfully during your journey.
  • Important Choices: Pay attention to your surroundings as you progress through the story and reach Season’s conclusion. Ask the right questions of the inhabitants, because the choices you make will impact your relationships and your understanding of the world. Remember, in the next Season, only what you collect will remain.

In this game, explore, save, meet people and unlock the secret of a strange world. Cross splendid landscapes on your bike, from which you can get off at any time to equip a recording tool from your bag. Each of them captures a different element: noise and music, art and architecture, the voices of strangers, fading religious practices and traces of distant seasons. Your tools allow you to examine the world in detail until you can understand the culture, history, and environment around you.

SEASON: A letter to the future will be available on January 31, 2023 for €29.99 on the Playstation Store, Steam and theEpic Games Store : you can order cards NHP on Amazon.co.uk.
