KABUL (Reuters) – Authorities in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Paktia said secondary schools for girls had reopened in recent days, although the move has not been officially approved.

Most girls’ secondary schools in the country have been closed since the Taliban took power in August 2021, after flip-flopping on their promise to reopen in March.

“Schools opened a few days ago, rules regarding Islam, culture and customs are respected, the principal of schools has asked students to return to school, and girls’ high schools are open,” he said. said Mawlawi Khaliqyar Ahmadzai, head of the culture and information department of Paktia.

A spokesperson for the Paktia Education Department confirmed the opening, but said his department was not informed in advance and sent a letter to the Ministry of National Education, whose answer he was waiting for.

The Education Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

In March, the Taliban reversed their decision to reopen secondary schools for girls, saying they would remain closed until a plan was drawn up in accordance with Islamic law.
