Is Samsung extending software support for three smartphones? A secret document from the manufacturer that is circulating online at least suggests this.
- Samsung could extend the support period for upcoming Galaxy A models. These should then receive security patches for 6 years instead of 5. The number of guaranteed Android updates could also be increased from 4 to 6.
- However, this has not yet been officially confirmed. The information comes from the company’s secret documents about the as yet unreleased Galaxy A16.
- The company could also make the change to the higher-priced Galaxy A56 and A36 models.
Samsung wants to set itself apart from other manufacturers of Android phones by offering long software support, among other things, and has continued to expand this in recent years. For the phones in the affordable A series, Samsung now promises you four Android updates and regular security patches for five years. The top models in the S series as well as the foldables Z Fold and Z Flip are now provided with updates for up to seven years. Now Samsung is apparently planning to expand support for its affordable phones.
This is reported by the website The Tech Outlook, citing secret company documents that were leaked to the magazine by a reliable informant. These are apparently marketing materials for the upcoming budget model Galaxy A16. These show that Samsung wants to provide the model with six Android updates and regular security patches for six years. A major expansion compared to the Galaxy A15, which, as mentioned at the beginning, only receives four Android updates and security patches for five years.
A-series will soon receive 6 years of updates
However, the authenticity of the materials cannot be verified. However, the extension of support is not unrealistic. Unlike a few years ago, the system requirements of new Android versions are no longer increasing as rapidly, meaning they can also be installed on older devices. Samsung is also coming under pressure. Google now offers seven years of Android and security updates for its mid-range phone Pixel 8a and Xiaomi has also extended its software support for inexpensive devices. Samsung’s unique selling point is therefore gone for the time being.
If the information is correct, we assume that other A models expected for 2025, such as the Galaxy A56 and the Galaxy A36, will also benefit from the extended software support. A release of all three models in Germany is not expected before spring 2025. Traditionally, Samsung brings its new A models onto the market in this country between March and April.
