A glaring security gap has been revealed in the operating systems of Apple devices. The IT giant has already taken countermeasures and released corresponding updates for all of its devices. The gap in Apple’s operating system allows criminals to install malware on Apple devices while users visit otherwise harmless websites. This allows attackers to gain access to Apple devices and access sensitive data. The group itself describes the problem like this: “Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution.”
Automatic updates protect against malware
To fix the issue, iPhone (iOS) and iPad (iPadOS) users should update their systems to iOS version 15.6.1 if they haven’t already. Macs and MacBooks require an update to macOS Monterey 12.5.1 to close the vulnerability. It also makes sense for Apple users to allow their devices to install updates automatically in order to always be up to date and to protect themselves against such vulnerabilities in the future.
According to Apple, the reference to the two vulnerabilities CVE-2022-32894 and CVE-2022-32893 came from an “anonymous researcher”. Large IT companies, including Apple, pay a reward for information about such vulnerabilities. In case of doubt, they forestall lucrative offers on the black market. Because there, sensitive information about security gaps is valuable for criminals as well as state and private hackers who use the weaknesses in the code for their own purposes.
