This is the synopsis of Rendez-vous à Tokyo, at the cinema this July 26. Behind this summary, both short and mysterious, hides the new feature film by Japanese director Daigo Matsui. We discover the love story between Yo and Teruo, or rather the story of their breakup. She is a taxi driver and the attentive ear of hundreds of passengers, he is a former dancer.
And if one could believe that the film starts with their meeting, it is not so since it opens on the contrary with the separated couple. Their relationship is then given to us to discover through seven of their July 26 meetings, like a countdown.
Beyond this singular narrative structure which allows it to skilfully extract its pin from the game in the universe of romantic comedies, Rendez-vous à Tokyo is based on a polished and very subtle staging, highlighting the talent of its two main performers.
Revealed for his role of Higen, Katsumoto’s nephew in The Last Samourai, and seen recently in A Family Affair, Sōsuke Ikematsu shines in the role of this dancer converted into a lighting designer, while Sairi Irô (Suzume) bursts the screen under the features of Yo, a woman full of surprises, questions and who makes us laugh as much as she upsets us.
