Berlin musician Peter Fox is once again giving a free concert in a problem area of his hometown.

The Berlin dancehall and hip hop musician Peter Fox (53), known as one of the frontmen of the band Seeed, is giving a free concert this Saturday evening (21 September) in Görlitzer Park in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Together with other musicians from the capital, he wants to celebrate a lavish “block party” there from 6 p.m. – not least to counteract the notorious negative headlines about the alleged crime hotspot with something positive.

City park becomes a dance floor

His “block party”, which he announced at short notice in an Instagram story, follows a “pool party” that he celebrated almost three weeks ago in the equally poorly-reputed Columbiabad in Neukölln. There were several fights and outbreaks of violence there in the summer. At the concert in the outdoor pool, around 3,000 bathers danced wildly on the lawns and in the water; entry was granted with a normal swimming pool card.

In his invitation to the free concert in Görlitzer Park, Fox specifically asks people not to “litter” the park and not to bring any glass bottles. He writes: “This is our city, let’s have a good time!”.

Mayor calls for nightly park closure

By turning the park into a dance floor for an evening, the musician is also making a clear statement against the plans of the current mayor, Kai Wegner (52), to surround the popular city park with a continuous fence and to lock it at night in the future. The CDU politician is clearly aiming to use this program of measures to curb drug-related crime and violence. However, this concept is not well received by the majority of Kreuzberg residents.
