SEGA purposely withdraws 5 games from sale for release

By May, it will be impossible to buy Sonic games on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch. The release of Sonic Origins is directly responsible for this decision.

If you want to own old Sonic games digitally, time is against you. Indeed, with the approach of the Origins compilation, SEGA take a radical decision: the publisher will withdraw 5 games from sale. Definitively.

Sonic games soon to be unavailable

the May 20 2022, SEGA will therefore remove several titles from the blue hedgehog on console stores (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch) and PC. The apps affected by this announcement are Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD. Or all the episodes that will have brand new ports in the coming weeks. Nevertheless, the Japanese publisher does not hide it and assumes this choice.

This withdrawal from the dematerialized market means that it will not be no longer possible to acquire the games in question individually. As a result, the only way to get them in the long term will be to go through the compilations that already exist… like on Nintendo Switch.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 will still be available on Nintendo Switch through the SEGA AGES range on Nintendo Switch while Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will still be accessible in the SEGA Mega Drive section of the subscription Nintendo Switch Online + Bundle additionnnel.

If you want a particular episode and perhaps at a low price, it may be worth taking a look at the various online stores (PS Store, Microsoft and Nintendo Store, Steam…).

A new generation compilation

As a reminder, Sonic Origins will be available on June 23, 2022 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. The games will have two display modes (retro and modern with higher resolution), more difficult missions, several playable characters as well as a “Special Stage”. The most expensive versions will also contain the input mirror mode, rings, music or even the possibility of switching to the Letter Box format.
