Sega will buy Rovio and become the father of Angry Birds

For almost a year now, Sega has made no secret of its desire to strengthen its position in the mobile games market. Today, the Japanese firm is taking a further step in this direction and announces its desire to acquire the Finnish studio Rovio. And at the same time, get your hands on the franchise angry Birds.

A contract representing nearly 775 million dollars and which consolidates Sega’s position in the mobile games market. A market that should represent, according to the firm, more than 50% of the global gaming market by 2026.

Sega now intends to rely on the expertise of the Rovio teams, in particular to improve the development of mobile-compatible versions of its already existing games. And if the acquisition does not seem to directly target Angry Birds, the license is nonetheless a significant bonus which the Japanese giant should take advantage of. However, it will be necessary to be patient to see the result of this association since the takeover should only be effective in the second quarter of the 2024 financial year.
