Self-service electric cargo bikes should soon land in France: here’s where

With a recent fundraising of 10 million euros, the young Dutch shoot Cargoroo wishes to expand its activity to other countries, including France. A particular city is particularly targeted to deploy a fleet of self-service electric cargo bikes.

In France, self-service electric bikes have been commonplace for a few years now. While many large cities have set up their own service, such as Vélib’ in Paris – although it is not strictly speaking self-service – private players have also tried their luck. Let us quote Lime or Dott.

This batch of protagonists should be joined by a newcomer in the course of 2023: Cargoroo. This name means nothing to you ? This is perfectly normal. This young shoot based in Amsterdam has not yet developed its activity here, even if it should not be long, tells us Silicon Channels.

Lyon in sight

Indeed, the start-up recently raised 10 million euros to extend its field of action to other cities and countries in Europe. Today, it is particularly focused on Amsterdam, Utrecht, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Antwerp, Leuven, Mechelen, Manchester, Berlin and Eindhoven. But what is she doing there?

It deploys fleets of electric cargo bikes available in self-service. Here, it is therefore no longer a question of proposing an individual and limited use of the cycle, but of pushing the field of possibilities a little further. The company is aimed in particular at parents wishing to transport children or at people wishing to move heavy objects.

Today, an electric cargo bike requires a substantial sum from a consumer. If models sail around 2000 euros, like those of Gaya, the prices can just fly above 3000 euros, as demonstrated by the Tern GSD or the Mustache Monday 20. And again, it is a question here of long tail.

Cargoroo is positioned on bike carriers – the front of the bike is elongated to accommodate a box of a certain capacity – which seems to offer a good place for one or more children. And a French city should soon be able to take advantage of it according to Silicon Channels : this is Lyon, the company’s next target.

Prices seem reasonable

According to the official website, a 20-minute reservation would only cost one euro. It is not very clear if this sum corresponds to the unlocking costs, or not. Then the hour of use, for example, is charged 4.80 euros. Which, in the idea, seems quite suitable depending on the use you will make of it.

On the other hand, the main interface of the site specifies that you must return the bike to where you unlocked it. A way for the start-up to better control the geolocation of its fleet. In the idea, why not, but in fact, it gives users less freedom.

Note that a French version of the site is already available: this reflects the ambitions and intentions of the brand in the near future, which has tripled its user base in the last year.
