Noè Ponti (50 m butterfly) and Maria Ugolkova (200 m individual medley) are eliminated from the semifinals at the World Championships in Budapest.

In the semi-finals over 50 m butterfly, Noè Ponti was not able to build on his performance from the preliminary heat. In the pool in the Hungarian capital Budapest, the Ticino struck after 23.29 seconds – that was only enough for the 13th best time. Since only 8 athletes started in the final, the 21-year-old was eliminated.

In the run-up, Ponti caught his attention with a Swiss record and the fifth fastest time. The 23.04 seconds in the semi-finals was exactly the time that brought eighth-placed Nicholas Santos into the final.

Ugolkova fails in 9th place.

The second semi-final on Saturday evening also gave the Swiss fans no reason to celebrate. In the women’s 200 m individual medley, Maria Ugolkova finished 9th (2:11.06 minutes) and thus exactly the position that was no longer sufficient for the final qualification. She was 34 hundredths of a second behind eighth-placed Katinka Hosszu.

Winnington and Ledecky take gold

On Saturday evening, swimming medals were awarded for the first time at this World Championship. Elijah Winnington (AUS) and Katie Ledecky (USA) won the first two gold medals in the men’s 400m freestyle. Later, Leon Marchand (FRA) won the men’s 400m individual medley final. Relay gold went to the USA and Australia in the men’s 4×100 freestyle.
