  • Serbia and Germany make it to the finals of the Basketball World Cup in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia (Sunday from 2:40 p.m. live on SRF).
  • In the first semi-final, Serbia beat Canada 95:86 in Manila.
  • The second semi-final also goes to Europe: Germany surprisingly defeated the USA 113:111.

Germany’s run at the Basketball World Cup continues. After the hard-fought quarterfinal victory over Latvia, the team led by NBA star Dennis Schröder prevailed against the clearly favored Americans 113:111. At halftime the USA were still ahead by just 60:59, but the Germans turned things up in the third and fourth quarters.

It is already the greatest success in the association’s history; even with Dirk Nowitzki, a German team has never been in a World Cup final. The jubilation in the Philippines was boundless; in the thrilling duel with the highly competitive Americans, the Germans celebrated their seventh victory in the seventh tournament game a year after winning bronze at the European Championships in Berlin. The negative series is over and the first success against the USA in a major tournament came at exactly the right time.

Serbia is waiting in the final

The first semi-final went to the Serbs around the 74-year-old veteran coach Svetislav Pesic. They defeated favorite Canada with a 95:86 victory, with the basis for success already being laid in the first two quarters. The Europeans went into the break with a 52:39 lead.

Serbia will play this summer without NBA champion Nikola Jokic, who is currently considered the best player in the world. Three-point specialist Bogdan Bogdanovic (23 points) was the best thrower for the Serbs, who will win a medal at a major event for the first time since 2017.
