Semi-permanent nail polish: the best brands

For a manicure that stands up to all tests, crack on the semi-permanent nail polish that guarantees you a long-lasting result. Peggy Sage, OPI, Vishine… Our complete guide to finding the semi-permanent nail polish you need.

Want a perfect, long-lasting manicure? Set your sights on semi-permanent nail polish. This manicure technique popular with beauty institutes ensures colored nails without a hitch for 2 to 3 weeks (compared to a week for a classic varnish). A long hold made possible thanks to the particular composition of the semi-permanent: varnish combined with an acrylic gel which hardens and sets under the rays of a UV lamp.
To wear a long-lasting manicure without spending a fortune, you can do it at home. The installation is similar to that of a classic nail polish, except for a few additional steps and tools required. Our advice and our selection of the best semi-permanent nail polishes for great nails all year round can be found below.

How to apply semi-permanent nail polish?

You have to start by preparing your nails: push back the cuticles using a cuticle pusher, file your nails into the desired shape, then buff the top of the nail with a polishing block. Finally, to increase the adhesion of the semi-permanent nail polish, degrease the nail by passing a cotton ball soaked in degreasing product (or failing that, water).
Then move on to applying the varnish. As for a classic nail polish, four coats will be necessary:

  • the transparent base that serves to protect the nails.
  • the two coats of colored semi-permanent varnish.
  • The top coat which serves to protect the color and make it shine.

But be careful, between all the layers, you will have to place your hand under the UV or LED lamp for 30 seconds in order to fix the varnish and activate the semi-permanent effect. Thanks to the lamp, no drying time, the varnish is immediately dry.

How to remove semi-permanent nail polish?

Be aware that removing semi-permanent varnish is a slightly longer task than removing conventional varnish. You will have to start by lightly polishing the top of your nails with a polishing block or a nail file in order to reduce the thickness of the varnish. Then take a solvent containing acetone and soak ten pieces of cotton. Place them on your nails then wrap the whole thing in aluminum foil or small caps specially designed for this purpose called “nail soak” or “nail soaker” (available on Amazon and Bleu Libellule in particular). Wait 15 minutes for the product to work, then remove. Your polish then comes off on its own, all you have to do is remove any gel residue with a cuticle pusher. If the color does not come off easily, close the foil and leave for a few more minutes.
After removing all the polish, use your buffing block to restore shine to your nails and finish with a drop of nourishing oil.

What are the differences between semi-permanent nail polish and gel nails?

It is common to confuse these two manicure techniques which are however very distinct. Gel nails are similar to false nails. Applied by a professional, the gel is applied to the nail and modeled until the desired shape is obtained. It is then catalyzed under a UV or LED lamp and then varnished. The nail is thus protected by this gel shell for a period of two to three weeks. Beyond that, alterations may be made to extend their lifespan. Regarding the price, it is necessary to count between 40 and 100 € for the installation of gel nails in an institute, against 30 to 40 € for a semi-permanent nail varnish.
Semi-permanent varnish is as liquid as a classic varnish and is applied directly to the nail to be varnished. It is then fixed with a UV or LED lamp.
