THE SSD signed SK Hynix have the advantage of being entirely designed in-house from the controller to the memory chips.

In December 2021, Intel announced the cessation of its activities in the world of SSD and their transfer to the South Korean semiconductor giant, SK Hynix, which remained rather discreet.

A discretion which, however, should not last since the beginning of the year, the brand has been teasing us with a PCIe Gen 5 SSD model whose performance should be among the best.

Homemade NAND, home controller

Several models of SK Hynix SSDs can be found at resellers, but it must be recognized that they are far from being present everywhere like this Platinum P41 which can only be found in certain stores in France.

Last March, during the GTC 2024, SK Hynix however showed its muscles with a model called Platinum P51 which, logically, will benefit from a PCI Express Gen 5 interface and memory chips – SK Hynix of course – 3D NAND TLC in 238 layers.

Another advantage of being called SK Hynix and developing quantities of semiconductors? We can rely on in-house production for the memory chips of course, but also for the controller.

2000 kIOPS random read/write!

Let’s admit that at Clubic, we had missed this first announcement of the GTC 2024. On the other hand, we were able to notice that SK Hynix talked about its Platinum P51 again during Computex 2024.

Better, the South Korean brand seems to have optimized certain elements since from 13,500 MB/s in sequential reading and 11,500 MB/s in sequential writing, it is now 14,000 MB/s in reading and 12,000 MB/s in writing. IOPS performance is even more impressive with 2,000 kIOPS for both reading and writing. It’s hard to find better PCIe Gen 5 SSDs on the market today!

Unfortunately, SK Hynix remains discreet about the onboard controller, the launch price of its SSD or its release date. Still, after the announcement of Silicon Motion’s PCIe Gen 5 controller, this will make one more competitor for Phison, and that’s rather good news.

Having fallen into video games at a time when it took a great imagination to see here a football match, there a tank fight in these few bars represented on the screen, I have followed all the developments for forty years. Loyal to the PC, but a fan of all genres, I only have trouble with JRPGs. Otherwise, from the driest turn-based strategy to the most spectacular FPS, including sports simulations or musical games, I can do it all... with a preference for management and games combining several styles. My video game pantheon would consist of three series: Elite, Civilization and Max Payne.
