Semiconductor makers see beyond mobile at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

“Diversification” is the watchword of the American semiconductor giant Qualcomm, which presented its latest innovations on Monday, February 27, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The only consolation is that the latest generation devices have more and more components on board.

Several new growth markets are therefore on its roadmap. In partnership with Schneider Electric and Capgemini, the group presented a project to develop automation systems in an industrial environment using 5G technology. He also presented, in the field of the Internet of Things, tracking systems making it possible to supervise activities such as logistics or the management of vehicle fleets, in order to optimize their operation thanks to the exploitation of the data collected. .

Third field of exploration, the automobile, where the group announced a partnership with Stellantis in 2022 and presented a concept car at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas at the start of the year. The American is continuing its “digital chassis” project, which combines its skills in the field of connectivity, infotainment (information and entertainment within the vehicle) and intelligent driving.

Collaborative platform

Last ambition: to become a benchmark player in the field of mixed, augmented and virtual reality, which he considers “a revolution as important as the arrival of the mobile Internet”. The brand already collaborates with more than 65 mixed reality device brands, including the most important (Meta, HTC Vive).

In addition to a new generation of dedicated chips, Qualcomm has revealed a new platform whose objective is to help the various players in the sector to collaborate more easily with each other and thus accelerate the deployment of a technology that is still very confidential.

Here lie the questions raised by these announcements, which focus on niche markets for a society still very dependent on the smartphone market (but also tablets and PCs). This continues to represent between three-quarters and 80% of its revenues ($37.5 billion, or 35.5 billion euros, in 2022) and it is also this that has allowed the company to see its turnover jump by nearly 10 billion compared to 2021.
