Send a DHL package: Not all customers can use the new service

DHL has launched a new service for parcel shipping. If you send something, you have a direct influence on how your shipment gets from A to B. There is another advantage to this, but the full functionality is not available to all DHL customers. It’s about rail transport.

DHL offers rail shipping as an option for parcel customers

Customers who want to send a parcel with DHL are now offered a new option by the logistics company. You can influence the route your shipment takes. Although DHL had previously used rail for transport, private customers can now decide for the first time whether their parcels should get from A to B by train.

According to Paketda, you can now make the appropriate selection in online franking. DHL therefore does not charge a surcharge. The advantage of delivery by rail: Uses DHL trains, which already run on certain routes, your shipment contributes less to CO₂ emissions – an aspect that is becoming increasingly important for customers. In addition to the public discussion about climate change, this is also proven, for example, by the increasing number of e-cars.

However, there are some restrictions when the shipping model is launched: the function is not available at all for many customers. According to the information from Paketda, it is only an option if both the start and destination of your package are relatively close to the train routes currently used by DHL and DB Cargo. Therefore she will only offered online and you will only see them after entering the address data – and then only if delivery by rail is possible in this case. However, this network is still very coarse-meshed.

Shipping by train will also only be available for packages that correspond to at least size M from DHL. Smaller consignments would be organized via the postal service and therefore reach the recipients in a different way.

DHL and Co. in comparison – which parcel service is better?

A clear conscience at no extra charge with DHL – why not take a chance?

So what do DHL customers get out of it anyway? On the one hand, you offer a good conscience because the climate impact of such a delivery is minimized, so you can simply test it at no extra charge. the Delivery should take a maximum of one day longer than before. DHL could also test whether customers are willing to accept potential disadvantages such as longer delivery times for more environmentally friendly shipping – an important step before making greater use of the rail network for parcel delivery.
