Sennheiser takes a new step towards the democratization of 3D sound. The firm announces the arrival on Netflix of its Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio technology, capable of offering immersive audio rendering on a simple stereo configuration.
Through its Ambeo brand, Sennheiser has always been very active in the field of sound spatialization, both for sound professionals (ambisonic recording solution, binaural 3D audio processing software, etc.) and the general public. The new solution unveiled by the German firm, the Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio, promises this time to be a major step forward in the democratization of 3D audio, especially as it becomes accessible for the first time on the very popular Netflix streaming platform.

Broadly speaking, Sennheiser’s Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio has the same goal as Apple’s Spatial Audio, to provide users with an immersive listening experience in 3D sound based on Dolby Atmos mixing, via a stereo monitoring system, with no intervention required. Nevertheless, the experience here is intended to be much more open since it is aimed at all devices, for listening through headphones (in binaural) but also on stereo speakers (in transaural), via the stereo track offered by default. by the streaming service.

In post-production, sound engineers have a rendering preview tool that allows them to control quite precisely the rendering applied by the Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio at the time of encoding, and thus ensure that all meet their expectations. This tool is based on a Dolby Atmos master file (in ADM or IAB format) and then offers various parameters, in particular to gauge the level of signal processing applied by group of elements (3D surround effects, dialogues, music, etc.).
In keeping with Sennheiser’s reputation, processing is done in full transparency, without interfering with the original sound. In other words, Sennheiser 2-Channel Spatial Audio faithfully reproduces the intention of the creator of the mix, without adding to it.
To mark the occasion, Sennheiser has entered into a partnership with Netflix for a first broadcast of this result via the very fresh season 4 of Stranger Things. Nothing excludes that we will find Ambeo Spatial Audio in the future on other content, other services or other media.
