The small EPP party has a seat in a cantonal government for the first time. The Basel area moves into the middle.

It’s a big surprise: Thomi Jourdan from the small EVP party is moving into the Basel government. The distance to favorite Sandra Sollberger (SVP) is around 1,200 votes.

Thomi Jourdan already thanks for the votes

This is the first time in the party’s history that the EPP has won a seat in a cantonal government – and the joy is correspondingly great.

Cheers from the small party EPP

With this election, the bourgeois parties in the canton of Baselland are losing their dominance in government. The executive moves to the center. The figures also show that all previous ones managed to get re-elected solidly.

SVP national councilor Sandra Sollberger started as the favorite in the government council election campaign. She is the loser on election Sunday. With their defeat, the SVP is also ousted from the canton executive.

At the center of the government elections in Baselland was the vacant seat of the outgoing Health and Economics Director Thomas Weber (SVP).

Extremely close race

Eight candidates ran for the five seats in the government.

Previous ones with solid results

The previous members of the government have done well. Anton Lauber (centre) received the most votes, followed by Isaac Reber (Greens) and Monica Gschwind (FDP), who were almost equal, in second and third place. Kathrin Schweizer (SP) also managed to be re-elected without any problems.

During the election campaign, the SVP candidate came under pressure. She ran a cautious election campaign in the media, for example she didn’t put up her own election posters and declined several invitations to election podiums. She justified this, among other things, with her workload as a member of the National Council.

They fought for the vacancy

On the other hand, Jourdan ran a very active campaign. The 48-year-old was omnipresent, be it on around 1000 posters or on his own YouTube channel.

District Administrator: SVP wants to become the strongest force again

The interim results of the district elections are not yet available. Four years ago the SVP was the loser. The central question is whether they will win seats again and thus become stronger than the SP again. With a plus of six seats, the Greens won the 2019 elections.
