“Another ordeal for the family”

“I was informed by the registry of the Assize Court”, further indicated Mr. Metzger. “He did it without warning me specifically.” “There was no prior consultation, it was he himself who materialized the statement of appeal (…) and not his lawyers at the registry of the Assize Court”, continued the Strasbourg criminal lawyer. Jean-Marc Reiser was sentenced on Tuesday to life imprisonment, with 22 years of security, the maximum sentence he faced, for the assassination in legal recidivism of Sophie Le Tan, a young student from Strasbourg.

Arrested quickly after the disappearance of the young woman on September 7, 2018, the day of her 20th birthday, Mr. Reiser had denied any involvement for two and a half years, before admitting in January 2021 to having killed and dismembered her. He then hid the body in a forest in the Vosges. On the other hand, he denied any homicidal intent and any premeditation, a position he continued to maintain throughout his trial, without succeeding in convincing the jurors.

Particularly procedural, Mr. Reiser was already sentenced some twenty years ago to 15 years’ imprisonment for two rapes, a case in which he did not hesitate to activate several legal levers: after a first conviction in 2001, he had appealed, had again been sentenced in 2002, before having this second verdict overturned on a point of procedure. Tried in 2003 by a third Assize Court for these acts of rape, he was sentenced, this time definitively, to 15 years in prison.

During the investigation of the Le Tan case, he had also multiplied his appeals, asking for example that several exhibits be removed from the file or repeatedly demanding his release.
