SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Tuesday granted a special pardon to former President Lee Myung-bak, convicted of corruption and embezzlement, shortening his 17-year prison sentence.

The 81-year-old former head of state was released on bail in June, at his request, due to the deterioration of his state of health.

The pardon will take effect on Wednesday.

Lee Myung-bak is the fourth former South Korean president to be sentenced to prison. Park Geun-hye, who succeeded Lee Myung-bak, was also sentenced after her impeachment in 2017 and then pardoned at the end of 2021 after around five years in prison.
