In the pandemic, a couple from the United States couldn’t see each other for more than a year. There was a big reunion on the 72nd wedding anniversary.

Virginia and Jack Byrne have been married to each other for 72 years. But last year was probably the most difficult of their long marriage for the 94-year-old and her 95-year-old husband. Because of the corona pandemic, they were separated from each other. Since Jack is cared for in a retirement home and Viriginia lives alone at home, they couldn’t see each other in the pandemic year due to the precautionary measures.

The joy of seeing each other was all the greater. Virginia and Jack celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary together, reports the US television station ABC News. The couple from St. Louis, Missouri, were finally able to embrace each other again.

Her mother was very excited as the meeting approached, Rosemary Byrne, a daughter of the couple, told the broadcaster: “As my mother waited to see my father again, she said, ‘Every minute feels like an hour. I am nervous like a schoolgirl. ‘”

Virginia Byrne couldn’t believe her luck: “My life was lit up again because I was able to be this close to my husband for the first time in over a year,” she told ABC News. “I looked him in the eye and his eyes were as bright as they always do when we’re together.” It was seen as a “wonderful moment” to be able to meet her husband again. It was very difficult for her to say goodbye.

In the meantime, the couple can see each other more often, the difficult time of the corona-related separation is over. Virginia Byrne hopes that the same will soon be possible for many other couples who are still separated by the pandemic: “I hope that many people will now be able to experience this moment when the vaccinations defeat this predator of togetherness.”
